Paul Kooiker

Paul Kooiker (b. 1964, NL) is a photographer
Paul Kooiker is best known for his conceptual photographs that play with the voyeuristic desire of its viewer. Women are prominent in his work but never as personalities. Their figurines are vague, or, when body parts are the subject, sharp. They are, nevertheless, like 'femmes fatales', elusive. Kooiker's work has recently been picked up by the fashion industry. Since then, he has been working with the world's most famous fashion models, fashion designers and magazines from around the globe.
His work has been exhibited at FOMU, Antwerp; Fotomuseum Den Haag; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam and Foam, Amsterdam. Kooiker’s work is held in public and private collections all over the world. He is represented by the gallery Tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam.

About the series 'Black Meat', 2007: The Swan series developed by chance, and so did its title. Kooiker photographed swans during a moment of contemplation in Zürich in 2007. Back home he discovered the quality of the pictures taken. He decided to deepen his knowledge of swans and became intrigued by the connotation in Middle Age Bestiaries. In these books of fantasy-animals, swans served as a paragon of hypocrisy because of their white feathers hiding their meat, which is supposed to be black.
