Jitske Schols

J I T S K E  S C H O L S (b. 1969, NL) works with a variety of mediums including photography, painting, drawing, collage and print making. Her main focus is portrait photography. She gained the Dutch National Portrait Prize in 2017.

Schols became fascinated by the passing of time and what it does to people, things or histories after reading a book in the 1980s about the former residents of her childhood home. In her artworks she often focusses on untold or forgotten (female) stories, bringing history back to the present. Memories and imaginations play an important role. The materials and processes she uses often refer to the themes in her work.
After working for 20 years in communications, Jitske Schols decided to commit herself to photography. In short time she built up an impressive oeuvre with an own unique signature. She is known for her portraits in national dailies like De Volkskrant (‘Zin van het leven’), Het Parool or AD Magazine. Her portraits are black and white or with faded colours and immediately recognizable by their combination of simplicity, melancholy and rawness.
Works by Jitske Schols were shown at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam in the exhibition ‘Ode to an Amsterdammer’ organized by Dutch National Portrait Gallery and in the same museum in the exhibition ‘MS Oranje | Koers gewijzigd’. She exhibited at Photo Festival Naarden with her photo essay on the life and times of Anna Witsen: ‘Songs for soprano’. Schols won the Dutch National Portrait Prize in 2017 for the best portrait in the previous year. Jitske Schols is represented by Galerie Caroline O’Breen.

'Shreds of Eve' is a life-sized series of poetic portraits'
Anyone who studies history learns the coherent stories of fathers, sons and husbands. We can only form an image of women by stringing together some shreds and threads of stories carelessly scattered around. 'Shreds of Eve' is a series of poetic portraits that emphasize the fragmentation of her-stories in history.
All portraits are carefully and lovingly composed by Schols. From various fragments of photographs by the photographer herself, found footage, drawings and digital paintings, piece by piece new portraits of women were created. They represent the number of untold or disjointed stories of women throughout history. With ‘Shreds of Eve’ new primeval women -Eves of shreds - arise to encourage the viewer to rethink history and tell future stories from an equal female perspective.
